Bespreking

A satisfying conclusion to the most hyped fantasy series ever

As Harry Potter is supposed to enter his seventh year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry a lot has changed in the magical world of our hero. Lord Voldemort finally succeeded in overthrowing the Ministry of Magic and is making sure that his Death Eaters can keep on terrorising the non-magical folk, also known as Muggles. Even more, there is one important mission at hand: catching Harry and making sure that he does not stop Voldemort from obtaining the ultimate power. So, this year school seems to be not an option for Harry, because Harry is on the run and Hogwarts is fully controlled by Voldemort's gang. Luckily Harry is joined by his two best friends: Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Together they have to find Voldemort's weakness soon, because the final battle is about to start...

The long awaited and hyped conclusion of the Harry Potter saga is finally available. Now the big question is: can this book ever deliver on the enormous expectations of the millions of fans out there? It is indeed impossible to satisfy all the readers with a denouement of a story that has triggered so intensely the imagination of numerous people. Taking into account this mission impossible, one can only conclude that with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows J. K. Rowling added a reasonably satisfying conclusion to the series. The later books do indeed lack the humour and charm of the initial instalments, but this only confirms that the author choose to write for a more mature audience as the series progressed. The important asset of the final book is that it cleanly resolves all remaining open items. Nevertheless, this ambition clearly did not leave much room for the development of a spellbinding storyline, such as we have encountered in the first three episodes. But not many readers will complain about this. Indeed, we all have grown to love the main characters and finding out how they survive (or not) is already reason enough to hurry to the book shop and buy this book.
